What Horses Taught Me Today

These horses and singing birds stopped me in my tracks today. Before seeing them, I was in my own little rollercoaster world due to COVID-19. They caught my attention and helped me realize I was focused on my stress and fear. I was grateful for the reminder so captured this video and as it turns out, I thought about them the rest of my run. Here’s what they helped me realize.

Being in social isolation, it’s easy to feel alone…even if you are with others. Feeling alone, we can feel scared and unsafe, especially for someone who’s been through any kind of past trauma.

* First step is recognizing the subconscious connection of feeling alone triggering feelings of stress and fear. THINK.

* Second step is consciously re-thinking and saying to ourselves “Being alone builds my inner-strength. I am safe.” SAY.

* Third step is being in nature’s sanctuary and exercising. For me, elevating my heart during trail running works out my stress, reminds me of my personal power, and that there is always goodness to be found in the world. DO.

What steps will you Think, Say, Do today…for betterment of yourself and those you lead?

What additional support in pro-actively facing stress, fear and uncertainty?

What If Monster

When my kids were young, we talked about the WHAT IF Monster. This monster is invisible…like most monsters are…and yet at times, it’s all we can see and hear.

This monster tells you all the ways you will absolutely fail and aren’t good enough. It encourages you to quit before you even try. To be defeated when the first handful of attempts fall flat.It is fluent in the language of shame, blame and judgment.

It is a powerful mountain avalanche that immediately smothers you with fear, doubt and unworthiness.

It artfully distorts the vision of yourselves and the world. Not wanting to feel or appear weak, we self-isolate. We become blind and deaf to our talents, optimism and self-reliance. Not having support of others (heightened with physical distancing during COVID-19), it is easy to slide down the Adverse Spiral.

So what to do?! Take 2 brave steps forward!

1st = Learn to silence the WHAT IF Monster by recognizing the physical and emotional warning signs.

2nd = Learn to stop the monster by building a powerful internal WHY NOT Mentor!

Like great leaders, mentors see us for who we are, help build our strengths, face our fears, deepen our confidence and encourage us to overcome challenges.

An internal mentor helps us to become our own hero. And thanks to Captain America and Wonder Woman, we know heroes always win over monsters!
